How to shorten product titles to 150 characters for Google

A rule with Maximum length: 150 characters and Trim on words. Longer titles are cut at the last whole word that fits, never in the middle of a word.

Google Shopping accepts up to 150 characters in a title. Longer titles are flagged, and descriptive titles built with rules grow past that limit easily.

  1. Open the data source, go to Rules and create a new rule - for example “Title max 150”.
  2. Optionally limit it under Conditions: title Length exceeds 150, so the preview shows only the titles that change.
  3. Under then pick the field title, choose Maximum length, type 150 and choose Trim on words.
  4. Check Changes preview, then Save Rule. Put this rule last, after the rules that build the title.

Example

  • Before (171 characters): a title with brand, model, colour, size, material and a long list of features at the end.
  • After: the same title cut after the last whole word within 150 characters.
Trim on characters cuts exactly at 150, even inside a word - fine for IDs, not for titles a shopper reads.
